Holsteiner Bloodlines Overview

  • The Holsteiner studbook is one of the smallest studbooks in Europe-approximately 6% of the total population. However, it has consistently produced some of the world’s most successful international horses in all disciplines.
  • The German Holsteiner breeders have strived to produce athletic, uncomplicated and reliable horses with strong nerves. The well balanced temperament and the outstanding character are of great importance.
  • When discussing bloodlines it is important to consider the Stallions influence as well as the importance of the mare's family.
  • If you are just beginning to learn about Holsteiners, it's a good idea to start to learn the top stallion names.  Since a stallion can produce many foals a year, its often easier to learn a few stallion names and then you can recognize traits they pass on in their progeny.
  • Your second step is becoming familiar with the mare lines, or stamm lines.  Stamm lines allow breeders to trace back the mothers line to the original foundation mare of the stamm.  In the 18th century, the German Holsteiner Association assigned numbers to the mares and hence forth followed the mare line to the present.  There is a book you can purchase with 'family tree' diagrams tracing back the mares and shows all the approved breeding stallions or international level competition horses produced by the mother line.
  • Breeding is a game of chance, however, knowing the stallions and mare lines and what they have produced can help increase your odds of breeding a superstar foal and it can increase your odds of buying a quality horse.  However, regardless of the paper pedigree, always evaluate the individual.  You can not ride the pedigree, you ride the horse.

Holsteiners are Winners!

  • Five Holsteiners won medals in the Olympic Nations Cup of Athens including Fein Cera, Coster, etc.  In total, there were 22 Holsteiners competing in show jumping in the Olympics in 2004.
  •  In the European championships in 2004, 16 competitors out of 76 trusted in Holsteiner horses. In the end, one of them was on top of the winners even twice: Christian Ahlmann with the Holsteiner Cöster by Calato-Constant was the winner of team gold, as well as of individual gold in the thrilling final.

  • Fein Cera was the world’s best show jumper in the World Equestrian Games in 2000 and is a Holsteiner!. During the whole competition with a total of nine rounds the mare, ridden by American Peter Wylde, she had only one pole down. In the final of the best four, traditionally with the change of riders, she got all three riders through the course with clear rounds. However, her success is no accident: Her father Landadel is said to be the best stallion by the “sire of the century” Landgraf I. Her mother Cera by Cor de la Bryère was also a top Holsteiner show jumper.

  • Five Holsteiner Capitol I-offspring competed in the World Equestrian Games in 2000 with outstanding performances by VDL Cardento by Capitol I – Lord under Peter Ericsson got team silver for the Swedish. Dobel’s Cento by Capitol I – Caletto II with Otto Becker finished in fourth place with the German team, and was placed seventh individually.
