• The Holsteiner studbook is one of the smallest studbooks in Europe-approximately 6% of the total population. However, it has consistently produced some of the world’s most successful international horses in all disciplines. 
• The German Holsteiner breeders have strived to produce athletic, uncomplicated and reliable horses with strong nerves. The well-balanced temperament and the outstanding character are of great importance.
• When discussing bloodlines it is important to consider the Stallions influence as well as the importance of the mare's family.  
• If you are just beginning to learn about Holsteiners, it's a good idea to start to learn the top stallion names.  Since a stallion can produce many foals a year, its often easier to learn a few stallion names and then you can recognize traits they pass on in their progeny. 
• Your second step is becoming familiar with the mare lines, or stamm lines.  Stamm lines allow breeders to trace back the mothers line to the original foundation mare of the stamm.  In the 18th century, the German Holsteiner Association assigned numbers to the mares and hence forth followed the mare line to the present.  There is a book you can purchase with 'family tree' diagrams tracing back the mares and shows all the approved breeding stallions or international level competition horses produced by the mother line.
